Measure student competency in AI partnership, not AI usage. Can they identify when AI is appropriate? Do they know when to override it? Can they explain AI recommendations to patients? These collaborative skills matter more than technical fluency.

The students using ChatGPT for clinical questions today will be the physicians making AI-assisted diagnoses in five years. We can either teach them to work with AI as an informed partner, or watch them learn through mistakes that affect real patients.

The gap between student AI usage and formal training will only widen. Medical schools that close it now - with curricula focused on partnership, ethics, and critical evaluation - will produce physicians ready for AI-augmented medicine.

Those that wait are gambling with patient safety.
