University of Michigan Law introduced a special optional AI-focused essay prompt while still prohibiting AI in personal statement drafting.

Some practical steps for students:

Test the major legal AI tools against known cases. See where they fail. Understand their patterns of error.

Learn data privacy fundamentals. Know what information can and cannot go into various AI systems.

Develop verification workflows. Create habits of checking AI output against primary sources, not just accepting what appears on screen.

Study the ethical guidance coming from state bars. The rules are still being written, but the direction is clear.

Most importantly, think about AI as a tool that requires oversight, not one that provides answers. The technology will become more accurate over time, but the professional obligation to verify output will remain.

Law students who treat AI literacy as optional will graduate into a profession that expects it as standard. Those who build these skills now - understanding both capabilities and limitations - position themselves for careers where they can actually use these tools effectively.
